VASTU FOR BASEMENT

Another space savers and utilization now, is to plan and construct basement.  Though Vastu rules do not approve presence of basement in structures, specifically constructed for residential purposes, but to enhance covered area for use, it becomes a good proposition. Presence of basement though, would attract mysteries according to some.

In case a basement is planned, it has to be constructed before any over ground construction takes place. Where a basement is planned, two most important things must be kept in mind.

a)     The basement must be constructed in right direction.

b)    In any case the basement must not go beyond the main foundation walls of the structure. It is always better to use outer walls for the basement as foundation walls for main structure. The over ground construction must start from South western corner, and the basement should be constructed before any over ground construction takes place. This is because any low lying area should be in the Northeast.

The basement must always be planned in northern or western side and North-eastern corner (Ishan kon) should be taken inside. It should be ascertained that the basement must be away from western outer wall, in case it is planned in Northern side.

In case it is planned in the eastern side, it must not touch the Southern wall.

It may also be built as two-sided underground construction but the rules are the same; that it is away from western and southern walls.

It is prohibited under Vastu rules that there must never be any pit or low lying area in East-southern (Agni kon) or North-western (Vayu kon) sides, If the walls of basement touches western or southern outer walls of the building, it would create a pit in these corners, hence touching of these walls are restricted.

A basement must never be made in the center of the building.

The door entry in to the basement must be made either in northern or eastern sides and it is advisable that it should remain open to allow fresh air and energies to enter in the underground construction.

Downward stairs may be made in the West northern corner, where the door is opened in northern side, and situate the stairs in South-eastern side when the door is in eastern side.

In case above instructions are followed in the plan and the construction, presence of basement would be beneficial for all kinds of construction.
