MUDRA SCIENCE PART II
TATTVA MUDRAS
Our body is made up of five elements, namely Fire,
Air, Water, Space, and Earth. Take any element out and the other four cannot
work at all. There is, indeed a very fine balance between these five elements,
and even a very small imbalance upsets our health. This balance can easily be
maintained by manipulation of the five fingers of our hands each one of which
represents one element of the nature. This is the most natural way to maintain
good health. Keeping thumb as a common factor, when the tips of the other four
fingers are individually joined with the tip of the thumb, four Mudras are
formed namely, GYAN Mudra, AKASH Mudra, PRITHVI Mudra, and INDRA Mudra.
Conversely, when the four fingers are individually folded and placed at the
base of the thumb, and, thereafter a slight pressure is exerted on them by the
thumb, four more Mudras are formed namely, Vayu Mudra, Shoonya Mudra, Surya
Mudra and Varun Mudra. Gyan means knowledge, Akash means space, Prithvi means
Earth, Indra is water god, Vayu means air, Shoonya means zero (opposite of
space), Surya means Sun and Varun is water God.
These eight Mudras are called Tattva Mudras. The word
Tattva means elements of nature. These eight Mudras are the basic hand Mudras
through which we can either increase or decrease the quantity of particular
element in our body and thereby restore the balance between various elements.
Tattva Mudras can further be classified in to two categories: the first
category tends to remove the deficiency of a particular element- four Mudras,
and the second category tends to remove excessiveness of a particular element-
four Mudras. Both categories restore the balance of the five elements in the
body.
