Dikpalas: The Ten Directional Lords

Ish: The Soma

Lord Shiva or Ish, the auspicious part of Mahadeva, rules the Northeast. The inauspicious being Shankar, the Lord of destruction. He has sacred river Ganges flowing from his matted hair, Crescent Moon on his forehead, fair coloured with poison in his throat. He is combination of life nectar and poison both of which are inevitable parts of our daily life. He lives on Mount Kailasha, the snow cladded peak, in the Himalayas. Northeast is the coldest area in Vaastu Shastra with southwest the hottest. His posture of a yogi makes this direction best used as a meditation room, shrine, deep study, yoga prayers and healing activities.

Sometimes, Northeast direction is called to be ruled by Soma with its Nectar like rays. Soma-in the form of a crescent moon-shines of Mahadeva’s forehead. Soma is another name of moon due to its cool rays and great medicinal effect.

The moon has several functions in relation to diseases. Roots and samples collected by moonlight are more effective. A disease contracted by a man under the waning moon tends to diminish.

Soma is represented as a white man, sitting in a chariot of three wheels, drawn by ten horses. He gives blessing with his right hand and in other he holds a club. Lord Shiva placed Chandra on his forehead and hence acquired the title of “Chandrasekhar” i.e. he who has the moon for a crest.
