SMALL HOUSES AND APARTMENTS

With the appropriate use of colors, you can make a small room appear larger and more spacious. Whites, greys, greens, lilacs or blue create a feeling of space, while red, pink, orange, terracotta, brown or rich cream create intimacy. Cream and beige create a restful atmosphere and are good for smaller houses.

It is better to paint the walls in natural soft shade. The color in the room can be provided by dressing up the floor and decorating the walls with artefacts and paintings.

Dark wood and ornately crafted furniture tends to make a small room claustrophobic. Similarly, too bright and bold-patterned upholstery should be avoided in small homes. Pine colored wooden or tubular steel furniture in simple lines creates the effect of space. For small homes, it is ideal to team it with small pattered fabric or plain smooth leather.

One can also add color to interiors by placing the right artefacts. Crystal wares, photo frames, silverware, books, paintings and family heirlooms also add color and personal touch that makes a house a home.

Storage areas must be planned judiciously in small homes to avoid clutter. You can give your room a spacious look with correct balance of storage cupboards, dividers, light furniture, color and lighting. Go easy on knick-knacks, collectibles, and picture frames, etc. Use closed storage like built-in-closets, cabinets and drawers because open storage spaces create visual chaos.
