VAASTU SHASTRA

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE

The term Vaastu Shastra is derived from Sanskrit words 'Vaastu' and 'Shastra'. Vaastu means nature, surrounding or environment and Shastra means systems. This is an ancient mystic science and art of designing and constructing buildings in general and housing in specific.

Panchbhootas are five basic elements of nature i.e. earth, air, water, fire, and space. All substances, human beings, animals and material are constituted by these five elements. Vaastu is the science of direction that combines paanchbhootas and balance them with the man and the material.

According to vaastu structure like a temple or a home is to be constructed as a miniature version, a microcosm, of the greater universe, the macrocosm. If this is done properly one can take advantage of positive forces within the universe.

Vaastu Shastra is popular in this modern, scientific world which means it is an ancient science that continues to be relevant in the present times. The fundamental principle of vaastu shastra is to add value to a man's life. Behind every vaastu guideline, there is a scientific reasoning that aims at providing an organized and convenient life to everyone.

Vastu shastra depends on different energies that originates from atmosphere like solar energy from sun, cosmic energy, lunar energy, thermal energy, magnetic energy, light energy, wind energy. These energies can be adjusted to upgrade peace, prosperity and achievements. If a house is made according to these principles, the inmates enjoy all the happiness in life. If it is against vaastu principles, it will be a spot for all kind of issues, stresses and no peace. (http://www.myvaastu.in)

Vaastu shastra principles and guidelines

Vastu Shastra describes characteristics for sites and buildings based on the flow of energy. Many of the rules are attributed to cosmological considerations-the Sun's path, the rotation of the Earth, magnetic fields, etc. The morning sun is considered especially beneficial and purifying. Hence east is treasured direction. The body is considered as a magnate with the head the heaviest and most important part, being considered the North Pole and the feet the South Pole. Hence keeping with one's head in the North is believed to cause repulsive force with the earth's magnetic North and thus considered harmful (www.Vastuscience.com).

The proper orientation means the proper knowledge of all the eight directions. Every direction has its own significance and has its own construction. The basic rules of Vastu Shastra are based on these eight directions. East is the most auspicious direction for the entrance of a home. This is because the sun rises in the east and is said to bring in positive energy and light into the household. The other acceptable direction that the house entrance can face is towards the Northeast. The South-East corner of the house is the most ideal one for the kitchen's location and cooking supposedly should be done while facing the East. The Master Bedroom should be located at the Southwest corner of an East-facing home. Toilets are to be located in the North-West corner of the building or the North-West corner of the rooms. If this is not possible, Southeast toilets are allowed. It is also recommended that the toilets, kitchen and Pooja room in the house should not be adjacent to each other.

Five elements of Vedic system are earth, air, water, fire and space. Each of this is energetically associated with a particular direction. Earth (Bhumi) is associated with the southwest; Air (Vayu) with the northwest; Fire (Agni) with the southeast; and Water (Jal) with the northeast. Space (Aakash) is the expansiveness in the centre of architectural form. Ideal placement of rooms their direction their functions, furniture and other personal items in order to have the most positive effect, to support how well you sleep and how abundant your cash flows. In Vastu Shastra there are multiple ways in which the designer and occupant can create a space for experience. Within the manifested form many foci must be established in a space meant for many people. But if the space has a specific activity, then gathering all energies in single centre proves to be very powerful. The latter would be suitable for a place of learning, worship, manufacturer and research. But in a home, a hostel or neighbourhood, several centre, or shifting centers is most inspiring and motivating. These gathering spaces should be fulfilled with herbs, healing plants and sacred water (www.Vastu Shastra.com).
