RELIGIOUS SYMBOLS
AUM (OM)
This is a Symbol of Supreme God. It is the most powerful word-symbol
for use in prayers and meditation. An idol can be solid like stone image or
subtle like fire. Sound is the subtlest of all idols and of all sounds. AUM is
the most potent and the most natural. Hindus believe that it was the first
sound produced at the creation of the universe, the Big Bang. As such,
everything emanates from this and represents the eternal “energy” released at
the time of the Big Bang. The sacred syllable AUM is the name of God. It is uttered
at the beginning and at the end of most Hindu prayers. It is considered to be
the essence of Hindu scriptures and also represents the concept of one God, “Ek
Omkar”, in Sikhism. Many explanations have been given for this sacred symbol;
the main facts are given below.
1)
The proper way of writing OM,
(Monosyllabic) is AUM (three syllables). The latter symbolises the Trinity
representing the three functions of God: generation, preservation and
destruction. “A” is the sound emanating from the base of the throat “U” is produced
by the impulse rolling forward in the mouth and “M” I produced by closing the
lips. There is no sound beyond these two extremes. So “AUM” covers the full
range of sounds and the entire phenomenon of sound.
2)
AUM stands for pure consciousness and
pervades all states of mind: walking, dreaming and deep sleep. It is called “Pranava”,
which means something that pervades life or runs through “prana” (breath).
3)
AUM
represents the omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent qualities of God. It is
the most revered name of God mentioned in the Vedas, believed to be the oldest
scriptures of the oldest religious tradition, but is also found in other faith traditions.
4)
The
first sound of the word AUM is “A” which occupies a very prominent place in all
languages.
5)
Hindus
believe that AUM is the highest mantra. The chanting of AUM has an
extraordinary effect on the human mind. It creates harmony, peace and bliss by producing
vibrations which awaken dormant vital centres within the body.
6)
AUM
is the common religious symbol among all the sects of Hinduism and is written n
many different forms in various Hindu languages. The shape of 3 represents the
Trinity, the accompanying 3 is the symbol of consciousness. On the top is the
half moon and the dot. The dot represents the momentary silence between two
successive chants. This can be interpreted as AUM having five syllables.
