HEALTH ISSUES
BODY MIND AND SOUL
In order to
appreciate the response of Hinduism to health issues, it is essential to
understand the Hindu concept of body, mind and soul, because its approach to
health is holistic.
The soul
(also known as Atman or Purusha) has three aspects: a) unmanifest, pure
consciousness, unchanging absolute reality, (b) Semi-manifest, nebulous;
reality; (c) manifest nature as an individual being conscious of the universe. The
three bodies of the soul are (a) Physical body when one is awake, (b) Subtle
body when dreaming; (c) Causal body when in deep sleep.
Similarly,
the mind has three states: instinctive (Manas), intellectual (Buddhi) and
superconscious (Karan Chitta). Manas is the seat of desire and controls the
sensory and motor organs of the body.
The physical
body is made from the five elements: earth (solids), water (liquids), fire
(energy), energy (gases) and space. These five elements are controlled by three
qualities (Gunas): Rajas (activity), Tamas (inertia) and Satva (purity- the
balancer of the others.
That is why
the Hindu scriptures place so much importance on having a clean and healthy
body. The body is the instrument for achieving all Dharma. Because of the
importance of maintaining a healthy body and mind, the scriptures have
specified rules about abstentions and observances called Yamas and Niyamas
respectively. These rules deal with personal hygiene and self-discipline. The
Ayurveda, a branch of Rig Veda, is the scripture that is concerned with the
well being of the physical body.
