Hari Om Namo Narayana!
Do you
recognize this illustration of the ‘Vaastu-purusha’ given
below that builds the foundation for a model for building a house by treating
it similar to a human body?
Let me
explain in detail now why knowing this diagram is important.
See, it’s
important to know the reason for anything you follow. Sure ‘Vaastu’
details the right and wrong placements for doors and windows and everything
around the house for a non-restrictive energy flow.
But if you
don’t know the logic behind it then it’s just blind faith.
Don’t fall
into blind faith. I appreciate the answers other people have given here and
they range across the spectrum from someone saying ‘Vaastu’ is just hocus pocus
to someone saying it can have disastrous consequences on the inhabitants of a
house if not followed properly.
The truth
is almost always somewhere in the middle.
First let’s
understand ‘Vaastu’. It is a system of architecture detailed in
the ‘Atharva
Veda’. The ‘Atharva Veda’ is the fourth
and latest ‘Veda’ which details a lot of subjects that intellectuals
refer to as ‘magic’ and ‘pseudo sciences. For example, ‘Jyotishmathi’ or
‘Vedic’ astrology.
You’re
encouraged to order an English or Hindi translation of the ‘Atharva Veda’
and read it as convenient to get an idea about what it says and how it says it.
Like in ‘Vedic’
astrology, for ‘Vaastu’ as well, all the answers are not to be found in
a single document.
The
‘system’ is made up of many details derived and put together from different
ancient documents called ‘Puranas’ and ‘Vedic’
scriptures. Bear in a mind a big reason these systems are called ‘Vedic’
is because most of the scriptures that contain details about them belong to the
‘Vedic’ period in Indian history.
The ‘Vedic’
people were very attuned to ‘energy’ and that is why they believed so much in
conducting ‘Yajnas’ to purify the environment and make offerings to the Gods.
In many
ways this is a common theme across world culture. It is very similar to
‘Shamans’ in the Native American people or the ancient Chinese people who
believed in the concept of ‘Ki’ which is energy.
The concept
of ‘Vaastu’ is to align the structure of the house in a way that elevates
‘Prana’.
If you feel
that all this is too spiritual and as some people have answered, ‘fake’, let me
tell you that these concepts are no different from the concepts being talked
about by Abraham Hicks in ‘The Law of Attraction’ or what is talked about by
Eckhart Tolle or Deepak Chopra.
The only
difference is that these people are able to convey their ideas more clearly and
in the end all these ideas have been derived from ancient wisdom.
‘Vedic’
knowledge is less readily available, even less understood and what the
practitioners of this knowledge are mostly able to communicate is a ‘trickle’
as part of an endless sea.
There is
also a high degree of co relation between different stories or ‘kathas’
from the ‘Shrimad Bhagawatam’ and many different ‘Puranas’ with
the ‘Puranas’ actually being loosely considered the ‘Fifth Veda’
So, what
that means is, there is a model for construction, planning and studying
people’s lives in general that is said to be in the highest alignment with the
elements for every day life application.
‘Vaastu’
therefore relates a lot with other elements like ‘Jyotisha’ and you can
use one to understand the other and ask deeper questions.
I’ll show
you something interesting here.
Look, shown
below are the two charts for the ‘Kalapurusha’ that finds application in
‘Jyotisha’ and ‘Vaastupurusha’ in ‘Vaastu’.
Now go back
to the photo given at the beginning of this answer and tell me what do you see
on the Southwest portion?
You see
that the Southwest entrance falls at the feet of the ‘Vaastu-Purusha’. The
feet are the foundation of the body.
How should
the foundation be?
It should
be strong, and it should be heavy, or the structure will fall.
It is for
this reason that the Southwest should be a place where there is as much load as
possible and least amount of open space.
Now if
there already is an entrance there you can overcome every problem with a
solution in ‘Vedic’ science.
This is, if
you understand the crux of what the ‘Vedas’ are about and the approach
they want you to take.
Energetically
speaking the Southwest should be kept as heavy as possible. If there is an open
space there like a door, you may keep an idol of Lord ‘Ganesha’ to
balance it out.
Logic? Lord
‘Ganesha’ is the heaviest in the universe.
Deeper
logic? Lord ‘Ganesha’ is the protector and guardian of wisdom and the
heaviest thing in the universe is wisdom.
Obviously,
this is just a part of the answer. I haven’t seen the entire map of the house
and there are so many different aspects to it including the size shape and
positioning of the plot on which the house is placed.
Also, in my
experience I have seen that every house doesn’t suit every person. Some houses
no matter how good will not be suitable for people with a particular
combination in their charts and for others it may work very well who have a
chart more aligned in that direction to support those metrics.
