VASTU SHASTRA BASICS
Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian
architectural framework that literally translates to "architectural
science." Vastu is the Sanskrit word that means a building or a dwelling
place. It focuses on the site's location, soil condition, the base of the
structure, building or dwelling-place, surroundings, etc. Vastu Shastra unifies
the subjects of science, art, astronomy, and astrology; it can also be said as
an ancient mystical science for the design and construction of buildings. Vastu
Shastra helps us to change our lives and to protect things from going wrong.
The Vastu Shastra dates back to around 3000 BC and it was first mentioned in
historical Hindu scriptures such as the Rig Veda, Mahabharata, etc. Vastu
Shastra considers the Sun's influence, including its light and heating. It also
considers the impacts of the electromagnetic field on Earth, biochemical
effects on the human body to provide a stable and productive existence. The
five elements of Vastu Shastra which are very significant are – earth, water,
fire, air, and space. The entire world around us, according to conventional
wisdom, is composed of these five essential elements. In addition, it is
crucial to coordinate the five elements of nature even with the five elements
of the human body. This teamwork is essential as this is what harmonizes human
relationships. Aside from the elements, the directions in Vastu Shastra are the
most significant component in this ancient action. Therefore, it can also be
said that Vastu Shastra is the science of directions combining all the five
elements of nature and balancing them with the human and material. The five
fundamental principles of Vastu Shastra are: 1. The Doctrine of Orientation
(Diknirnaya), 2. Site Planning (Vaastu Purusha Mandala), 3. The Proportionate
Measurement of the Building (Maana), 4. The Six Canons of Vedic Architecture (Aayadi)
and 5. The Aesthetics of the Building (Chanda). These principles must be
followed while designing and constructing the building to ensure aesthetics,
proportionate, comfortable sized, and well-oriented building. The vital factor
of Vastu Shastra is Sun which must be taken into account while designing the
dwelling units. As the intensity of Sun changes from morning to evening, place
to place, and from season to season, the buildings must be designed so that the
people living inside the building must receive beneficial rays of the sun while
carrying out their day-to-day activities. Inhabitants perform different
activities at different times during the day in different rooms, and the
position of the sun keeps on changing. So,
the primary target of Vastu Shastra is to place the rooms according to the
position of the sun and different activities performed to expose its
inhabitants to sunlight constantly even they are inside the house the whole
day.
